Holiday Craziness is Coming to Town

Been out freezing my booty in my little studio getting ready for a few more Holiday shows. Kaleid Gallery's annual show, entitle "Hark" opens first Friday December 2nd at 7pm. I'll have about 6 or 8 new pieces and will also be there if you'd like to come by and say hello, wish me happy holidays or just give me a hug. Just an idea. Luna Park Chalk Art Festival

Ok, so this was my first time doing chalk art on concrete. I was a little intimidated but just decided to go for it. I didn't bring a photo or a sketch or anything to go by, like most things in my life I just winged it. Because I normally work really small, most of my pieces top out at 7 inches, doing a 10x10 foot drawing seemed impossible but 4 1/2 hours later there you have it.

This was the 4th Annual Chalk Art Festival at Backesto Park on the Northside in San Jose. Friends Lacey Bryant, Al Preciado, Paul Gonzales, and our fearless leader Katrine Loera chair and organizer of the festival, along with loads of other artists, kids and high school art students made some incredible pieces. There was also some really cool entertainment, art booths, food trucks (I had rad Korean tacos from Mogo and amazing handmade ice cream from Treatbot!) This was a fantastic event and if you weren't there, check it out next year!

Sisters of Mercy: Nine Nuns I Have Known

Friday night is usually date night. Mr. Adams & I went and saw a movie...The Help. I had read the book, which is unusual, I mean I can read, but my spare time is usually devoted to making stuff so I don't read that much, and especially not best sellers. In any case I did like the book and the movie was really good as well. Anyways, I'm straying away from my point. While getting our tickets, 2 nuns were ahead of us in line. Real nuns. Updated habits, not the kind I remember from catholic school, and blue not black, summer weight habits. One looked just like my 3rd grade teacher, Sister Celelia. We called her Sister Hitler (top row, 3rd from left). She was not the nicest of nuns and reminded me constantly that I bore a resemblance to the troll doll Ricky kept in his desk. She sent me to the principal's office more than once, and once I called her a bitch under my breath, which got me in real trouble, the kind that included a yard stick in the cloak room. I spent the rest of that school year in her classroom a prisoner unable to move or open my mouth for fear of what she might have planned for me.

In any case in seeing these nuns enter the theater my husband says to me, "You're feeling guilty, aren't you?"...yes. Yes I was. I had just finished "Sisters of Mercy" a nod to the nine nuns I had known in elementary school. Most I imagine are probably dead, so here was my chance to immortalize these women, the kind of women that don't exist much anymore, save the 2 nuns who decided to see The Help that evening, a strange coincidence and reminder of what a bad person I am or uh, was.

The Sisters of Mercy weren't all bad, I loved some of these women, even Sister Loretta, with the lovely singing voice, and crackerjack skill at whacking your fingers with a ruler when you weren't paying attention. Or Sister Mary William, who loved math and spoke with a funny little lisp, the short and stout puffy little nun we called Muffin. Our principal Sister Virginia was probably the first practitioner of tough love. She was known by the nickname Beaver, for all the years of her reign, because of her prominent buck teeth. Once a group of students set a trail a sawdust from the convent to her office, the kind of cruelly funny prank that only kids forced to wear wool uniforms in California and go to mass everyday are capable of.

Trying Something New

Keeping things new and exciting is always a challenge and I'm not just talking about my marriage (hee hee). As an artist I try challenging myself regularly, I figure there's always something to learn and I don't want to just settle into one thing and become a Thomas Kincaid type, cranking out the same crap day after day. (Note: His stuff is crap, not mine, but I guess that's a matter of opinion) Anyways, you gotta grow, change and part of that means trying new things in order to keep it fresh, peoples.

OK so I'm a painter, but I'm always experimenting with new materials, I'm a freak for inks, odd rubber stamps, fancy art markers and all kinds of art supply store goodies. I often work in clay, handbuilding sculpture and for my day job I make alot of handmade tiles for architectural projects. However, I've never been able to master the art of throwing pots. While in college many years ago I attempted this great feat and was a complete failure. Of course back in those days they were kick wheels, none of this silent electric wheel stuff, it was hard work. The fact is I never did get the hang of it, my pots all looked like some kinda rumpled tube top on the laundry room floor. Yes, this was the 80's.

Well so recently an old friend who is an amazing ceramicist opened a studio called Higher Fire and I decided to take a class. The owner Dan, is an amazing teacher and has been super patient with me. I'll admit I didn't take to it right away, but I'm starting to get it and and after sort of putting my own take on it, I actually like my pieces. I've been using letter stamps for some recessed phrasing and then when the clay is leather hard carving in some of my images. I then hand paint them with glazes and fire. Check out some of my first pieces and some still in progress.

Another new thing I recently tried was making mono-prints. A couple of weeks ago I also got the opportunity to take part in a workshop at The Institute of contemporary Art here in San Jose. I was sponsored by a member of the board there for this workshop where the idea was to take artist who work in other media, like painters, photographers, sculptors etc. and teach them to make prints. The teacher was Fanny Reznek, an accomplished printmaker, who was wonderful in teaching us the basic use of materials. Anyways, check out my results!

Never Much Cared for My Brother - original mixed media painting

February is kinda a whirlwind for me. First off it's a short month, and it includes Valentine's Day and what 20 years ago I thought was a good idea, my birthday, my husband's birthday and our anniversary. Boy was I stupid. Valentine's Day is a chuck it sort of holiday for us, leave it to the kids and all the idealistic suckers out there high on love. My manfriend and I spent a few days celebrating 20 years of wedded bliss, as well as our respective (I won't tell you how old we are) birthdays up in Calistoga, soaking in mineral pools, sipping wine and eating tasty vittles. I would highly reccommend it.

I was in 2 great shows in February, Love Sick at Psycho Donuts in Campbell and the Love/Hate Show at Picture This Gallery in Long Beach. Thanks to all of you who made it out there, especially my SoCal folks.

Be an Art Collector!

When people come into my house, I'm always asked, "Where'd you get all this cool art?". Well,for me art is all consuming. I want to live an artful life, so as my days are filled with artmaking, my weekends are filled with visiting galleries, artist's studios and art fairs. Collecting art for me is exciting as well as inspiring and I love that at home I'm surrounded with the work of artists I love. I'm also not one of those artists that have my own work plastered all over my own house, not that there's anything wrong with that, I just think it's more exciting to love and support other artists!

Some people think that collecting original art is an expensive hobby, well I beg to differ! So much original work is way more affordable than framed prints or bad decorator pieces that so many people insist on putting OTC (over the couch). On top of owning a one-of-a-kind piece, you are also investing in an artist's future. Any hey, you never know they might just become the next Picasso!

So where do you start? There are many cool websites where you can buy killer affordable pieces. www.etsy.com for example, one of my favorite websites and a place where I sell my own work www .murphymae.etsy.com. There's also http://www.socurio.com a really cool site that features tons of original art. There's also http://foliotwist.com/ and http://fineartstudioonline.com/ places that host artist's websites where you can find tons of stuff that fits both your taste and your budget.

Visiting artist's studios is also a great way to meet artists and see their work. Many cities host Open Studio Tours where loads of artists will have their studios open to the public on a given weekend. You could also visit galleries, its really a fun way to spend your weekends. I know the perception is that all galleries are expensive and intimidating, but there are tons of co-op galleries where local artist show affordable art...I show at one called Kaleid here in San Jose www.kaleidgallery.com and most cities have one or more of these types of galleries. Even coffee houses and small restaurants show and sell great art these days. I've sold a ton of stuff at a donut shop! http://www.psycho-donuts.com/. There are also some pretty good art fairs (there are some pretty cheesy ones too). I like Bazaar Bizarre Bazaar http://www.bazaarbizarre.org/ and Renegade Craft Fair http://www.renegadecraft.com or art and craft items and here in NorCal the Sausalito & Capitola Art Festivals are pretty good (although alot of the art can be pretty conservative for my taste).

If you're an artist, many other artists are more than willing to trade. I've scored some awesome pieces this way. It never hurts to ask, contact artists that you see on line if they'd be interested. Artists are also interested in bartering, if you have a skill you may be alse to trade it for some awesome art!

Illustration Friday: Chicken, Fowl Love

Even though I live in a city of about a million people I have chickens. Urban chickens I think is the term used today. I have 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Buff Orpingtons and 2 Barred Rock Chickens. We call them the F troop - Francis, Fern, Flora, Fanny, Fiona and Frieda. This is our 3rd flock of chickens. We keep the D girls over at the organic botany garden my husband runs at the school where he teaches. Chickens are not as dumb as everyone thinks, they're quite clever, really, and affectionate. I've grown fond of my birds...I have Fowl Love.

2010 in a Nutshell: A so-so year in review

2010, what can I say...not my best year, but not my worst either.

Good things that happened: I had a successful solo show. I went whale watching in Mexico and got to touch whales, even a baby one! Both my kids graduated. My daughter got into the art college of her dreams. My son started high school and is still there. I (nervously) did an overhead presentation of drawings about my life. I made some rocking mosaics. I started teaching again. I'm still married, and better yet, I still really love my husband. I got 6 more chickens. I rode a horse for the first time after being afraid to my whole life. I'm healthy. I started baking (big time). I made some new friends. I drove by myself from Portland to San Jose (this is kind of a major one, I used to be afraid to drive in unknown territory and I don't really like cars). I'm still making art, everyday.

Bad things that happened: My dad passed away. I got a little bit fat. My daughter moved away to go to college. I got bi-focals. I started teaching again.

So the good outweighs the bad, mostly, except for the dad part. I hope they're right about the whatever doesn't kill you, business.

What I hope to accomplish in 2011: Overcome another fear (snakes, public restrooms, knitting?), make more clay art, learn again to throw pots, start my illustrated novel (really, its about love, revenge and PTSD), sell enough art so I don't have to teach much, get rid of my little bit of fatness, grow lots of things, smile more, be patient and don't fight with others, love, make creme brulee, sleep 8 hours a night, actually write my blog every now and then.

I haven't participated in Illustration Friday in awhle, well actually I haven't participated in much lately. Anyways I chose this painting called "Escape" oner that I really like and my good friend Karyn & Eric Lammerding now have in their collection. There's something about being out on a bike, the feeling of freedom, the thought that you could pretty much go anywhere if you were up to it. A bike gives you the chance to escape to put distance between you and whatever it is you want to get away from.

One week ago today my dad died. He had been in the hospital for 2 1/2 weeks with a blood clot in what was left of one of his lungs. He had emphysema for many years and in the past 5 or so had been on oxygen and slowed down progressively until he could no longer walk a few steps without being out of breath. It was difficult to watch. My father had always been what you'd describe as robust, a big strong guy, a man's man who seemed capable of anything. "Was he a smoker?" everyone asks. Yes, but he had quit at age 42 when my youngest brother was born in 1965. Unfortunately, he had grown up with a smoking father, worked for many years in a smoke filled office...the damage was done. My mom called me and my older brother the day my dad passed, I'm grateful I was at his side when he left us. My dad was a good man, a truly kind man who gave us all a great life, he showed us love and support in everything we attempted. He always wanted to be an artist, he went to the Chicago Art Institute on the GI Bill after WWII to study what was then called commercial art. It was not in the cards for him, he left to make money first working selling Studebakers, then refridgerators, eventually becoming a union man, championing worker's rights for 28 years.

This Saturday my husband and I will be driving our oldest Ivy up to Oregon to PNCA, http://www.pnca.edu/ where she'll study illustration. I can't help but think she's finishing something my father had started more than 50 years ago. She found this old drawing in a drawer that my father did, he was always doodling, we all had to laugh, seeing the similarities that flow from each of us father to daughter to granddaughter.

On the top is a picture of my dad Richard Williams and my daughter Ivy about 15 years ago. I miss you Dad.

Well I had a good run at Kaleid Gallery and sold several pieces...whew-hoo(a combination of relieved and excited)! Thanks to everybody who came out to see the show...I really appreciate all the support and encouragement that comes my way!

I'm back to work, both at my day job and in the studio creating some new work, meanwhile getting my just turned 18 year old daughter off to college next month. Yes, I have produced another artist, she'll be off to PNCA in Portland to study illustration. She's just opened an etsy shop so if you'd like to support her endevors check it out...she's really good, and I'm not just saying that because she's my daughter!

"SEE HERE" solo show ...thanks all!

So the opening of my solo show "SEE HERE" went pretty well. Not a huge turnout due to the SubZero Festival (which was quite awesome btw) happening at the same time. Happily, several friends and collectors came out to support me and I sold quite a few pieces. Woo-hoo! Big thanks to everybody who made it, it was very cool to put together an entire body of work and put it out there. Everybody seemed to love my giant wood puppet whose arms and legs went up and down when you tugged on the string which dangled between her legs and the new clay and mosaic pieces which I am quite proud of. My boyfriend dolls were also a hit, with hottie emo boy Riley selling early in the night (Thanks Chris!) I made a few give-away wood block prints, (there may still be some at the gallery) and I did some serious baking for the event and was cleaned out, big thanks to you all for not allowing me to take leftovers home to eat them all by myself. The show runs until July 9th so please go check it out when you can, here's a bit about the show:

In "See Here" I'm working with the idea of telling someone off, letting them in on how you feel, letting your opinion be known, while maybe what we’re really saying is "see, here, see inside my heart, feel what I'm feeling". My work is about emotion; it’s about what people think about but never say, about what you've said but wish you hadn't or about how actions speak more than words. It’s the process of what we feel inside and how it manifests itself in words and actions on the outside.

My quirky, naive style is intentionally childlike, alphabet blocks spell out heart breaking messages and words packed with emotional heat are scrawled in brightly painted backgrounds. Our relationships with one another, and with the world around us are put under the microscope and seen through a most simple eye, see here, this is who I am.

See Here, I have a show of new work coming to Kaleid Gallery on First Friday, June 4th. Included in the show will be loads of new paintings, some sculpture, a few of my "boyfriend " dolls and some really cool mosaic pieces that I'm really excited about! May 1st always reminds me of May Day in Catholic School when we danced around the statue of Virgin Mary with ribbons and flowers. I still dig Mary, all sweetness and light, none of that gruesome Catholic stuff. May is beautiful, my garden is going off, there are hummingbirds aplenty, its time to plant our summer veggies and a couple of my chickens even laid 2 eggs apiece this morning! That's Little Tina Turner up there hanging out in my studio.

Here's some info on a couple of upcoming shows I'll be in this month. I'm making some pieces for "Nurses and Donuts and Art, OH My," at Psycho Donuts, set to open on May 15...see details below. If you haven't been to Psycho Donuts in Campbell, it's a trip! Come to the opening...my daughter Ivy Atoms will be doing live drawing along with Christine Benjamin. Also adorable artist Trina Merry will be doing some live body painting. And of course there's "Delicious" at Studio gallery in SF, opening May 9th.

Mark your Calendar: Two New Shows this Spring!

What better excuse to blow off dishes and laundry and especially cleaning the bathroom than to make art! I have 2 shows coming up in May and June and have been in the studio everyday working my little (ok big, I have man hands) fingers to the bone making art.

The first show is called "Delicious" at Studio Gallery in San Francisco. If you haven't been to this great little gallery, you're missing out! The directors Jennifer and Rab are amazing and have a great eye for some awesome Bay Area artists. I've bought a few pieces in there, I just can't help myself. Two of my favorites are Bill Dunlap and Richard Benbrook. Anyways "Delicious" is a show all about art inspired by food and drink, I've done 4 pieces for this show, including this one, which is kind of a self portrait entitled "If You're not Careful".

The other show is a SOLO Show! Yes you heard it here first! Well, there's actually 2 solo shows going on simultaneously at Kaleid Gallery in June, I just happen to be one of them. I'm going all out on this one. In addition to a selection of new small paintings, I've been working on slab clay and mosaic pieces, art dolls, canvasses and some clay sculpture. I'm still trying to think of a title for the show. I have a long list of possibilities but nothing's jumped out at me yet, I'll keep you posted. The show opens on June 4th, which is First Friday in Downtown San Jose & there's an artwalk so all the galleries will have openings. There will be tasty vittles and live music and I'll probably do some serious baking, which is actually something I'm quite good at. If you're local please try and come! In any case my studio looks like a bomb went off but I'm making lots of progress with my clay work...I can't wait to fire and glaze these puppies. The pieces below will be assembled with broken tiles and the like, I'm really excited about these!

A few weeks back I did a little presentation as part of Kaleid Gallery's $2. Tuesday Quirky Lecture Series. I knew I just couldn't go up there and talk about my work so I decided to use this old overhead projector that my husband hauled home and do some drawings on transparencies. Although I was quite nervous, I thought for sure I would pee my pants, but it went over pretty well. Anyways a few people have asked that I put it up on my blog...so here goes! Hope you like it....its very informative. Please let me know what you think!

Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be an artist

or the fastest runner in the world. Sometimes I would run as far and as fast as I could. I got lost alot.

I went to Catholic School when there were still nuns. The Sisters of Mercy (dun,dun, dun)

My real name is Mary, but my father thought it too plain for a girl like me so he called me Murphy

At school there were 2 other Mary's in my class, so using my middle name the nuns called me Mary-Lea.

The refused to call me Murphy. They said it was a drunk Irishman's name (I think they were referring to Father Murphy.

The nuns used to hit me in the fingers with a ruler if they caught me drawing in class.

I once drew a picture of my teacher who we called Muffin (she was old and puffy) and our principal who we called Beaver (she had buck teeth) and I got a spanking on my bare butt bootie in the cloak room.

After they let me out of Catholic school I went to public school. My art teacher there thought I was pretty special. But then I found out he had married a couple of his former students once they graduated Ewwww.

I went to art school in the 80's. Art then was about light and space and nothing interesting. I didn't get it or fit in. It made me feel insecure about my work.

I finished college and became a gallery director and curator. I only did art in secret.

I got married...to a bad man

Then I replaced him with a good man (he's not really Canadian)

We live a simple happy life filled with art & nature & pets & laughter. We had 2 babies who grew up to be artists in their own right.

Along the way I tried many jobs to keep our little boat afloat including waitressing, teaching comedy traffic school, even a phone sex operator. But what I really needed was to find my way back to art.

I started teaching art to kids. They were fearless, uncompromising and uncritical. They were inspiring.

I got a bit older and brought my art out in the open, I liked what I saw, others did too. I felt comfortable in my old skin as an artist.

My work is about what I see out of the corner of my eye.
Its about the things we think about but never talk about.
Its about raw emotion, those indescribable feelings that can't be put into words.

I make art everyday. I create painting and sculpture an do large public artworks. I have traveled full circle and returned to the artist that I always was.

Sketchbook Show at Kaleid Gallery

People often ask me, "Murphy, where do you get your ideas?". Basically, I'm a snoop, someone who justs quietly walks through the world making observations on the human condition. I've got many ways of collecting these observations. One, I'm pretty stealth with the camera phone, I often times take pictures of that unsuspecting person doing something ridiculous, or ridiculously cute. Like the time I saw this guy cramming a giant corndog in his mouth. Still one of my fav photos, I later did a much more complimentary rendition of a hot dog eater. Two, sometimes when I see something visually alluring I sketch these quick, almost stick figure renditions of my idea, sometimes on the backs of receipts or old envelopes I find in my purse. One day in a communal dressing room I caught this lady staring at herself in her giant granny panties with this horrified look on her face. I've been there lady, I know, no sexy panties for me anymore, those days are over. From this I created "Driving the Bus," a term my husband uses whenever I wear those oh so unflattering underwear.

Another way I gather information is by being a good eavesdropper; listening in on people's conversations is great fodder for subject matter. Whether its mothers talking about the horrible play-date they had to endure with their angelic child or hearing kids in carpool talk about their badly behaved parents, like "Oh no its Thursday night and mom's going to "Drunko" tonight, hope she's up in time to make my lunch tomorrow". Seriously priceless, I couldn't make half this stuff up.

"I'll Show You Mine," currently at Psycho Donuts.

Just got back from a great turnout at Psycho Donuts...big thanks to Christine Benjamin for all of her hard work putting this fantastic show together. Tons of really great pieces and things seemed to be flying off the walls during the opening!

I'll be gone this week on a whale watching trip in San Ignacio, Mexico...but bringing a sketchbook! Hopefully I'll come up with some great new ideas for paintings involving complicated relationships with whales or scientific research types (of which I am married)or who knows what.

Happy 2010?
You're not serious, January is just about over and I'm just getting started on the new year? Well, yeah. I guess I needed a few weeks to catch up on old 2010, think about what's up for me this year and even make a few resolutions. For one, stop procrastinating, get on the ball Murph! Like this blog for example, writing it was supposed to be fun, but it's become a chore like the ding dang dishes. All that is going to change I tell you! New blog posts galore in 2010! Number two, I need to get outta my pj's before noon...or four, a shower would be a good idea as well, and scrubbing the paint out of my fingernails and off my elbows might be a nice change. Numero three, just because I'm an artist doesn't mean I have to have a messy house. I'll attempt to keep the art in the studio and not on every flat surface in the house. I'm purdy lucky to make art for a living, sure beats other jobs that I've had like teaching comedy traffic school or my one day stint as a 1-900 phone "actress"...so it's time to get with the program!

I'm still working with Lizard Skin Studios on a public art piece in Milpitas, where we've erected a 20 foot steel tree and are hanging strands of recycled objects from it. Art as Gift Show in Willow Glen

I'm busy working on lots of small pieces for the annual "Art as Gift" show put on by my good friend Julie Stover every holiday season. This year it will be in the old Casa Casa space, 1355 Lincoln Ave, in downtown Willow Glen. In addition to paintings I'll have some quirky ornaments and if I can pull it off a couple of art dolls. Kaleid Gallery is a cool community gallery in downtown San Jose that I've been involved with for about a year. Every third Tuesday they present "2 Buck Tuesday", a chance to get some little but great original art for only $2 bucks. In addition there are funky lectures, and live sketching and painting and live music. This piece called "Mommy's a Wino," was done for the Willow Glen Foundation's wine tasting and auction. I figured since its a benefit for a foundation that supports kids and it was a wine tasting, this was more than appropriate...plus I know quite a few Mommy Winos! The event is November 8th at the Willow Glen Library, they'll be lots of wineries there for tastings, great food and lots to bid on!

I'm also working on some very small pieces for "tiny" an annual show of small works under $400. at Studio Gallery in San Francisco. My favorite so far is one called "I'll Show you Mine..." Brewing Storm Brings Fresh New Work!

Yesterday, here in Northern California, a storm was coming in. I could smell it, feel it in the air and it felt good. There's something about rain that makes me just plain giddy. I'm no scientist but I've heard it has something to do with negative ions in the air. It works for me.

For some wacky reason I'm one of those people that gets shocked easily, I can't wear a watch, the battery just stops, I've blown out more kitchen appliances than I can count and wearing acrylic is simply out of the question; I become one of those lightening rod thingies in a glass globe and become, well, conductive. Its quite unpleasant. Electricity, I'm full of it. But when it rains, or its just about to, thats when I'm in my element, energetic and creative and in my own unbalanced way, balanced. So, I spent the better part of the day in my studio watching the storm come in and creating 4 new paintings. I was on a tear. Today the storm is in full force; its cold and dark with downed trees, and whistling winds...I love it.

Yikes, its been awhile since I've updated my blog! I apologize seems that the great summer weather has me playing hooky! But its back to uh, business, I guess. I'm back in the studio creating all kinds of new work, including some clay, felted wool guys, dolls and lots of my little paintings,.

I'll also be in a really fun show coming up on Saturday, October 3rd at Psycho Donuts In Campbell. It's a group show including artists Christine Benjamin, Trina Merry, Michael Foley, Lacey Bryant, Mary Medrano, Tracy Cox and more! We'll all be creating spooky, freaky art with a ghoulish twist. Besides the art, there will be live music, food and Psycho's frightfully good donuts! The event is free come join us from 10am - 2pm at Psycho Donuts 2006 S. My Day Job

I often get asked, "You don't sell enough of those funky little paintings to survive, do you?" Well no, although I do sell quite a few, I have a day job. Its a cool day job, even an awesome day job. I do public art project management and installation with a local artist/architect. 'What the heck is that? ", you ask. We primarily work on school sites, creating art within an architectural setting. We just finished Trace Elementary School in San Jose where we worked with welders and glass blowers to create 2 amazing projects with an abstract rose design. I also did a broken tile mosaic around the school's outdoor stage. Like I always say, I'm lucky to be a working artist!

You may have read about Psycho Donuts in the newspaper or seen a story about them on the tv. Psycho Donuts is a small donut shop/art gallery who is getting some pretty controversial attention because of their name and the theme of their shop. Donuts have names such as Bipolar Disorder and Massive Head Trauma, there's a small padded cell where you can don a straight jacket and have your photo taken, and there's lots and lots of wild and crazy art. You see there are some in the mental health arena that feel that Psycho Donuts have gone a bit too far. As an occasional mental health patient myself, I feel that Psycho Donuts brings positive attention to the issue of mental health and through their efforts greater acceptance. This weekend is San Jose Museum of Art's A3 auction, I have a piece in the show so come by and check it out April 25 and 26. There's also a fantastic Andy Warhol prints show up now.

I'm getting my studio all spiffy for Open Studios, May 9th and 10th, stop by my home studio between 10-5pm to see what I've been working on. I'll have lots of new pieces for sale, including my sculptures and hopefully I'll finish a couple new Boyfriend Dolls. My friend Christine Benjamin will be joining me with her super-fun paintings.

I'm busy getting ready for the Girl Power show which will happen Friday, April 3 from 8-midnight. I'll be a little late getting there as my son is performing in "Seussical" that night, but I'll be there around 9pm and will be doing some live painting. My Daughter Ivy's 1st Solo Show

I've been teaching art classes since my kids were wee little babies, and my oldest child Ivy usually came along with me before she was in school. She's just sit in the back of the class and follow along with whatever I was teaching that day. Well now she's 16, and is having her first solo show at her high school. Her work is really incredible...she's currently developing her portfolio and visiting art schools. She hopes to become a writer & illustrator.

A New Member of our Family
As many of you know I'm just plain goofy when it comes to animals. We've just adopted a new pup from the San Jose animal shelter. He only had days left to be adopted and my husband and I just fell in love with him, so we've brought him home. His name is Ramon, we call him Ray and he's about 9 months old. They're calling him a chi-weenie, chihuahua and dachshund but I think there's a little baby deer thrown in!
